Fake Profile – Facebook / Instagram profile crimes

Posted on By

Why Do Hackers Create Fake Facebook / Instagram Profiles?

1. 💸 Scams and Fraud

  • Hackers impersonate someone you know to borrow money urgently, ask for UPI payments, or request recharge/financial help.
  • Many victims trust the identity and send money, falling into the scam.

2. 🎣 Phishing Attacks

  • Fake profiles send malicious links in DMs to steal:
    • Login credentials
    • Banking details
    • Personal photos or files

3. 🧠 Mind Games / Defamation

  • Used to defame a person, create relationship misunderstandings, or spread misinformation.
  • May post vulgar, communal, or abusive content from the fake profile using your name and photo.

4. 🎯 Targeting Women / Sextortion

  • Attractive fake male/female profiles are created to:
    • Engage in video calls
    • Record intimate photos/videos
    • Later blackmail victim for money or favors (sextortion)

5. 🌐 Misinformation or Political Propaganda

  • Fake accounts are used to:
    • Create or forward viral fake news
    • Share false political or religious content
    • Bypass platform moderation

6. 🧬 Data Harvesting

  • Fake accounts track:
    • Your friend list, habits, activities
    • Gather info for larger identity theft or fraud schemes

🛡️ How to Prevent Fake Profile Misuse

1. 🔐 Update Privacy Settings

  • On Facebook & Instagram:
    • Set “Who can see my profile?” to Friends Only
    • Hide friend list, photos, contact info
    • Avoid making relationship status or location public

2. ⚙️ Enable Security Measures

  • Turn on 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) using mobile/email.
  • Use a strong password (symbols + numbers) and change it regularly.

3. 📷 Watermark Your Images

  • Especially women should add watermark or username overlay on profile pictures to discourage misuse.

4. 🚫 Avoid Sharing OTP / Personal Info

  • Never share OTP, Aadhaar, PAN, mobile number, or passwords in DM.
  • Do not respond to “official” looking fake accounts.

5. 🔎 Regular Self-Search

  • Google your name, email ID, or reverse search your image on Google to check for impersonation.
